Mission statement

South Portland Food Cupboard Director Sybil Riemensnider completes the ribbon cutting at an open house on Sunday, May 4, celebrating the pantry's move to space at 130 Thadeus St. A large crowd was in attendance, including volunteers, business owners, donors, and others who have supported the effort for the past 18 years. The all-volunteer organization has grown from sharing food with 96 clients a month in 1997 to now serving 677 people each month.

The South Portland Food Cupboard is dedicated to alleviating hunger by providing supplemental food to the needy of South Portland, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, and surrounding communities. We strive to offer nutritious foods, provide a full week’s worth of meals for each family once per month, serve with compassion and caring, treat each client with respect while bringing hope and encouragement to their lives, and educate our clients about other available community resources.

Portraits of “Who We Serve …”
(We have changed names and some of the specific details to honor their privacy, but these stories reflect an honest profile of those who seek assistance from your South Portland Food Cupboard.)
A family of six spend two years in refugee detention camps waiting; three adults and three children who fled the terror of life in Iraq. The children have witnessed the brutalities of war, the death of friends and the misery of food insecurity. They sought and were finally granted legal “asylum” status, arriving here with very little except for the cloths on their backs and the hope of a better life. The family is grateful for the assistance they receive from a variety of sources. We do our best to provide them with food to lessen their fear of hunger. Sometimes the grandmother represents them when she comes to see us with her grandson on her hip. She is awestruck by the selection of fresh vegetables we offer! Her gratitude is evident by her tears of joy and toothy grin as she leaves with bags of healthy groceries for her family.
